Midnight Special & its Amazing Score
The music & score for Midnight Special is phenomenal, some parts of this film feel like a music video, which more often than not, play to the service of the music very reminiscent to Upstream Color.
I found the film in general to be very solid and very thin on the script level, there is a sci-fi twist but it feels very natural and grounded in its explanation. The acting was superb Michael Shannon is great as always but Adam Driver really is the weak point of this cast he just never feels like a real character.
The cinematography is very haunting and striking at times and other times it feels very personal and emotional. Interesting enough Jeff Nichols introduces some very subtle visual effects and a cascade of lens flares throughout the film that never feels to abrupt and annoying, like say a JJ Abrams lens flare does. There are some interesting car driving scenes very similar to Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" that grab you into feeling like a passenger in the vehicle especially the opening scene.
David Wingo was the mastermind behind the score. He plays with texture on most of the pieces of music, utilizing very subtle synths but I do find it very interesting how intrepid the beats he works in can be. Also there is a striking undertone throughout every piece of music that I found worked fairly well without it ever feeling overwhelming while watching the film. To say the least I was impressed and more often than not I was affected by it emotionally throughout the film and that at the end of the day is what you want in an amazing score.
